Friday, July 3rd, What's on Your Patriot Woodworker Agenda?

Recommended Posts

Well I have had the day off for the holiday and been in the shop since about 6:30 this morning. It has been raining here since last night and has not let up yet. I guess my First Friday for July will be a wash out. This will be the third month we have we rain or snowed out this year.

Oh well I have plenty to keep me busy.

I got this extra large cutting board glued up Tuesday.

I got started sanding on it Wednesday night.

This morning I got it finished and I am about to apply the Mineral Oil.

If the rain lets up, I am going to upgrade my electrical to the shop on Saturday. I have a 60 amp feed right now and I am going to put a 100 am feed in there and a new breaker box in giving me a few more circuits.

So I have an ambitious 4th weekend and hope to get in a bit of BBQ on the grill.

Hope you all have a great 4th and enjoy some time with the family, eat too much and get to see a bunch of fireworks.

Share with us your agenda for the 4th weekend. You know we here at TPW like to hear from you and what you are working on. So post those family BBQ pictures and special recipes and any other projects you do this weekend.

Happy 4th of July to you all!!!!

Workbench is empty this weekend. On the 4th, the hordes descend on us to get a front row seat for the local fireworks- which are launched just a few hundred feet from our back yard fence.

I end up taking Quigley to the basement. He is terrified of the explosions that literally shake the house.

Well since I am by myself other than the cat, I am going to probably be in-between loaf mode, and getting a few pens done that have been laying around for a while, some for as long as a year or more. Real easy way of breaking back into woodturning after the surgery. :)

Be safe on this holiday and I'll catch you later.

Just completed the "Roll of Honor for the Grand reopening of the HHV craft center across from Hines VA Hospital. The ceremony was 6/18/2015

post-4174-0-91784400-1435981574.jpg

I designed and built this as attribute to all the veterans who come into our center. My Best friend Greg Hopper designed the lettering and did the layout for the Crown, I built the case and custom pen after trying the first time I got mad and while trying to make it look a little lighter, it was first built of Pine and did not survive my expectations so it got thrown against a wall it will be good for the scrap bin now  and I then went and bought some oak and completely redid it.

It has a custom  made pen attached so that every Veteran  that comes in can sign in and leave his or her mark.

We took about 4 weeks to finish it and I am as thrilled as can be about the way it looks when completed.

before you ask it was all completed by hand except for the large pieces of Masonite that comprise the back and signing board.

My fellow Veterans were amazed about it.

Have you thought about a Thunder Shirt for Quigley?  Friends say they really do help.  Ruby is okay overall with loud noises but I still keep her near me when the Idiots start shooting off fireworks. Our legislature in Lansing (State Capitol) changed the laws a few years ago to make it easier for people to buy fireworks  This has been nothing short of a disaster.  One man dead this year a tv station lost an eye a  couple of years ago.  Not to mention people's peace disturbed and our pets terrified.  Something else is Military Veterans who had PTSD.  For them the noise of the fireworks is very deleterious.

That is absolutely gorgeous.  A great thing.  Thank you for making that for HHV.

I've got a couple of pens I want to turn and I want to try another small fretwork pattern on the scroll saw.  Other than that, I want to try to do a couple of organizational fixes around the shop.  I want to move my pen press.  It's hard to get at since it's behind the bench grinder so I want to make a vertical mount for it so it will be easy to get at (thanks to someone who had his pen press mounted that way and gave me the idea).  I also want to finish up a scroll saw blade holder (storage -- not for the machine) and rearrange some things on the table I have my lathe on.  Just organizational stuff.

So far I have had a pretty productive 4th weekend. I haven't gotten everything I wanted to done but I never do so the list just keeps going.

I did however finish the Really Big 3X Cutting Board. Here it is with my normal large cutting board laying on top.

I am also working on an Island Shelf that is made out of Cherry. It will be 60" long x 25" wide and 1 1/2" thick. I glued it into two pieces and the put the two pieces together. Just got to get the final sanding done and apply a finish. Hope to finish it by the end of the week.

I also got the Grizzly DC out of the box and put together. I didn't get to work on my wiring to the shop so it isn't plugged in yet. Rain here all day Friday and Saturday so I couldn't work outside pulling new wire to the shop.

I might have to pull it over to another plug just to hear it run for a minute.

After all that, burgers on the grill, homemade Peach Ice Cream, Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies and Rice Crispy treats. Wow was I stuffed.

Hope you all are having a great 4th and enjoying family, friends and getting to do what every you want to.

I'll catch you on Monday and see how you did over the weekend.

Home-made peach ice cream sounds delicioius.  Hard to get peach ice cream - even commercial peach ice cream around here any more.  It's my favorite.

Didn't get a lot done this weekend but did get the main thing done. Sierra or what PSI calls a Gatsby twist pen in Redwood burl. I think it turned out great myself

Unfortunately, it will not let me post it here even if it let me upload it. The error states You are not allowed to use that image extension on this community.

So just look for the redwood burl sierra pen in my gallery until we can iron this out.

Thanks :)
