Ron Dudelston
Ed, I'm guessing John Moody will chime in him since he's the cedar guru.Ron DudelstonSite AdministratorAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
John Morris
Hey Ed, my first question would be, what are using the cedar for? Chest or drawer liner? Is the primary wood of a project such as the actual casework or box?If it is being used as a lining, you would not want to finish it.If it is being used as a primary wood in your project, you'd be safe with any finish such as a water base or oil base varnish. It depends of what look your after as well. I am assuming your not going to stain it, so an off the counter product such as Cabots or Varathane would work fine. And if your spraying, shoot a light first coat on the project to act as a sealer, then follow up with a couple coats.Sand the seal coat out with 220 and the second coat as well before applying the third coat.We can elaborate more on the finishing process if you tell us what the project is and if your spraying or brushing, there are some thinning procedures that need to take place if your spraying or brushing as well.More information will really help us. Leo Pedersen
Since you are using aromatic cedar I might venture a guess that you would like to smell it once in a while. If in fact that is the case, as John mentioned do not put a finish on it. What I wanted to add is that once in a while just run some 220 or higher number sanding paper on it to reactivate the smell. I lined both ends of our walk in closet and she likes that same thing done once in a while. Charles Nicholls
Depending on what you are using it for, if you really want a finish on it but still want to smell the wood as I would too, I probably would use no more than mineral oil or a combination of mineral oil and paste wax, but the paste wax has a heavy smell too so I wouldn't use much.Charles NichollsSite Hostnicholls61@att.netProud supporter of The Wounded Warrior Project, Homes For Our Troops and the NRAhttp://www.etsy.com/shop/nichollswoodworks
Fred Wilson
Ed, might as well get my 2 cents in.  I use  it for some of my scrolling projects.  Since I'm an oil kind of guy I use oil based lacquer - bt only on one side and edges.  I never finish the backside since I (and other folks) like the aroma of the cedar.  Other than that, I agree with the usage comments.Fredaka Pop's Shopwww.pops-shop.comEX-21 (Presently on the floor. John Moody
Ed, sorry for the delayed post. I was making a cedar table yesterday . On chest I usually spray several coats of shellac and the for the finish I like to us General Finishes Enduro Var. I usually use the satin finish and spray three to four coats after the shellac has dried and cured. Hope this helps John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
