  1. Hey folks, I have an idea, the last MWTCA What's It project for June spurred an idea in me that I think will be fun and more equitable for all. At this time, there are two ways you can win the current month's What's It. The MWTCA decides your answer is correct. You are chosen in a random draw. Proposal We would eliminate the random draw as the second way to win, and add the following: Instead of a random draw, for each months What's It topic, within the topic page, a voting poll would be installed. While the month is rolling along we could vote for "Best Answer". If MWTCA decides our answers are not sufficient, than we'd default to the "Members Choice" or "Best Answer" to award the membership too. No more random draws. Here is where the real fun begins! We need to butter up the Primary Winner prize. So, since it's so hard to get a good referenced and researched answer for MWTCA, and since it's so hard to get our answers accepted by the MWTCA, for the legitimate (MWTCA sanctioned) winner, we'll issue the calendar year membership, and along with that, we'll award a tool too. The tool would be in the spirit of the MWTCA, it may be an old Bailey plane, it may be a new hand tool sponsored by one of our supporters, It may be an old clean and usable Disston hand saw. But rest assured, the tool will be as classy as you all are. So to break it all down Primary winner (decided by MWTCA): One calendar year membership, and a hand tool. Alternate winner (decided by our membership): One calendar year membership. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
  2. Ok ladies and gentlemen, we now have our July "What's it" live and ready! The image(s) below is a MWTCA "What's It" image for you to research, and tell us all here in this topic post, just what the heck is it! Remember, the first accurate answer wins a one calendar year membership (or what's left of the calendar year) to the awesome organization MWTCA! If an accurate answer cannot be arrived at by the end of the current calendar month this project is posted, a random drawing will be held to include anyone who participated in this months What's It. One winner will be chosen to receive a calendar year membership to MWTCA and all of it's wonderful benefits of membership. Compliments of The Patriot Woodworker Community. For a run down on this project and the rules, please see this page at "The Patriot Woodworker and MWTCA "What's It" project" Project details There are none! In this case, no details have been provided but for what you see, as nobody knows what the heck this is. Perhaps one of you have just happened on one in grand dad's shop, farm or factory, and you may actually know "What's It!" Remember, "What's It" is not always woodworking related!

For a run down on this project and the rules, please see this page at "The Patriot Woodworker and MWTCA "What's It" project" A different "What's It" This is a unique What's it. Since we already know what it is, there is a specific question regarding this saw. What we are looking for is a specific answer to the following question. "I picked up this old Disston at a yard sale and I can't find anything like it.....it has a copper blade. It is magnetic, so I assume it's copper coated. Do you have any information on why a saw would be copper? Should I sand it to find the etching?"

Good luck folks!

  7. The Patriot Woodworker community is proud to bring to you the MWTCA "What's It" department of images related to hand tools and implements. If you are not familiar with the MWTCA "What's It", please see the current page at http://www.mwtca.org/whats-it.html We are in cooperation with MWTCA to bring this fun event to you, on a quarterly basis as it is presented by MWTCA quarterly in their publication "The Gristmill". We contacted MWTCA and asked them if we could perpetuate the "What's It" here in our woodworking community in order to bring more awareness and appreciation in the area of hand tools and implements. How it works We will post the "What's It" as they become available through the MWTCA, usually on a monthly basis here in our community in the Hand Tool Forum. Your job is to research the content of the image and tell us what it is. The grand prize A one year (calendar year) membership to MWTCA and all of their benefits and publications. A 25 dollar value sponsored by The Patriot Woodworker. Rules This project is open to members of The Patriot Woodworker community only. Sorry, but only members who live in the United States can participate. (Please don't be offended, out of country memberships cost more than our budget allows) All (U.S.A.) members can participate, including our forum hosts and administrators. If an accurate answer cannot be arrived at by the end of the current calendar month's project is posted, a random drawing will be held to include anyone who participated in that months "What's It". One winner will be chosen to receive a calendar year membership to MWTCA and all of it's wonderful benefits of membership. Participants are only eligible to obtain one membership per year. (What would you do with two memberships?) Members who have already won a membership can still participate in the current calendar year projects, members who win two or more times in the same calendar year will be encouraged to donate their membership to a disabled military veteran woodworker. The only exception a winner will benefit from winning twice in a calendar year, is if they win the What's It award for the last quarter, in which the new membership will be applied to the next calendar year. Current "What's It" will be closed after an answer has been verified by the MWTCA. The MWTCA only accepts a verified source to support your answer, so one should be submitted with your answer, such as a patent, catalog entry, tool book reference, or a respectable website on the subject. Do not let these requirements prevent you from having fun and submitting educated answers on the subject without verification, we can worry about references later. All answers are welcome, as well as healthy debates regarding "What's It".
