  1. Hey fellas I'm at the point where I need to finish out some of my turning tools and figured I should stop by before making the investment. I've got a Jet 1221 VS and am looking for both a bowl coring system and Longworth chuck appropriate for my lathe. Far as the coring system goes I'm almost settled on the One Way 12" mini system. If there's a better system out there for a beginner like myself please mention it, but I'm fairly sure this should be the best option for ease of use. I see they offer replacement cutter heads. If the kit doesn't come with a carbide cutter should I go ahead and order that as well? As for the Longworth chuck, I already have a Nova G3 chuck and wondering what's the least expensive but capable option I should look at for a Longworth that's compatible with my Nova G3? Also, not being that studied up on these kind of chucks, since my lathe swing is 12" I assume any Longworth described as 12" is appropriate for my Jet. Last tool question...need advice on a good sanding system, drill, pads and disks. I get emails from the Woodturners Wonders and they're advertising two of their systems. One angle drill driven and the other friction driven. I'm guessing the drill is the better option? Only issue I have with that kit is Reed Gray talks about how the softer backed pads don't do well with the lower grits, so I guess I'll have to get more parts than this kit offers. Are the Woodturners Wonders kits worth looking into or are there better options out there? Sanding kit link And last, I have absolutely lucked out and found 10 good sized Walnut trees that a guy needs cut down, so if it turns out I can get this very labor intensive job done I'll have wood for a good long time to come. Brings me to the question, what's the best way / procedures / time of year to fell a tree with the idea of keeping it's bark on through storage / drying and the turning process? Believe I've seen winter is the best time to fell but is say November weather in Kentucky good enough or should I wait more toward late Dec or Jan?
  2. Posting this a day early as family commitments will keep me tied up for a while. Our Patriot Turners- Not sure how I missed this post from @Gerald but hope he can forgive me for the oversight. Gerald is still using up some of that pecan wood he got a couple of years ago- In this post he explains a little about his plans for the piece- @forty_caliber was commissioned to turn a bowl from a specific species. He got a good start on it and gave us a glimpse- Forty gave us an insight into how it turned, in this post- @bradleyheathhays posed a question to our forum- actually several question. He is looking for information on various chucks, a coring system, sanding supplies and wood storage. Our members offered several ideas/suggestions. Please see his post and offer any input that would be helpful- What’s Coming Up- More information at- https://awgbvirtual.co.uk/ For The Newbies- A fun little project for using scraps or small branches Some projects can benefit for specialized holder. A short video demonstrating the use of a mandrel- A little more advanced project for the kitchen from Alan Stratton- Expand Your Horizons- A couple of videos with demonstrations by well known turners- Mike Waldt- Robert Sorby- Those of you that do casting, a sweet little box from Carl Jacobson. At the end of the video Mr. Jacobson gives his opinion on a brand of sandpaper. Want a 2 color bowl but you don't do segments? Check this out! New Turning Items- In the above video, Mr. Jacobson offered his opinion on the sandpaper he used. This video shows the testing process on a wide selection of sandpaper/manufacturers- The write-up for the video- https://kmtools.com/blogs/news/the-great-sandpaper-showdown-top-3-sandpapers-for-woodworking-in-2021 Ruth Niles' November newsletter is out. She has a couple of kits More information here- https://nilesbottlestoppers.com/product/unique-blank-kit/# Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- Been asked to turn some bowls from a walnut tree that had to be taken down. The tree had special meaning to the owners. The pieces supplied had been left outside and were splitting pretty bad but I was able to get some small blanks. Two bowls are rough turned and soaking in soap/water. The third is hopefully destined to become a natural edge bowl. Walnut doesn't hold on to its bark really well and the bark is quite thick. I was hoping this could go from start to finish but that's not going to happen. Shaped the outside and applied CA the cambium area around the piece Hoping to keep the bark in place, I used my Dremel tool and created a circular opening through the bark, into the sap wood. Then loaded the "moat" with CA to soak into the wood. I'll keep this in a plastic bag until I get back to it. It may just be a miserable failure. Time will tell. Safe turning and stay well
  3. Heads Up! The Patriot Fundraiser has been extended for a few days. If you haven't had the opportunity to get those raffle ticket, you're in luck! He is really getting to be a professional at cranking these out Check out his post for some more images of his progress- We don't hear much from @Cliff but when we do, he is always looking at some thing interesting. Recently he is considering making a thread chasing jig for his lathe. Hope he posts it when it's finished- It may be the beginning of summer but that isn't stopping @Ron Altier from making Christmas ornaments! Please hop over to Ron's post for a description of what he did- Ron also posted a picture of a bowl he found at the thrift store. Someone put a lot of work into this turning! Please see Ron's post for additional photos- Speaking of bowl finds, @Steve Krumanaker came across a unique bowl while on vacation- In his post, Steve tells a little more about this one- @forty_caliber put his Longworth chuck to good use in making a project for his daughter. He tells us a little more about this sweet segmented turning in his post- @Gerald got a great start on a bowl being turned from a root ball. The colors in this are fantastic- Gerald shows us some more images and explains some of what he has done in this post- Gerald provided us with a way to keep up with the Magnolia Woodturners Club, of which he is a member. This is a Facebook page. Facebook has become a popular way for woodturners to communicate and display their turnings. You can see some of the awesome turnings produced by the club's members by following the "Visit Website" button. @HandyDan helped out a friend by reproducing some chair spindles. These sure are perfect replicas! Check Dan's post for all of the kudos he received from our members- Although posted in our general woodworking forum, the content applies to all aspects of woodworking. @kmealy gave us a link to an article on pricing your work, originally published in Fine Working. Capt. recently added a video on tips and hints of CA finishes- New Turning Items- Didn't come up with anything, although, the Rubber Chucky website Rusty mentioned does have an alert on their homepage to watch for some new products. Everything Else- Rick Turns You Tube woodturning videos for the past 2 weeks- Before we left, I did have a chance to finish up the little spalted elm bowl. I turned it to the finish dimensions and then left it dry in my little air kiln ala Rick Turns. Need to get some better picture- It's been warm here so I spent time in the cool basement shop. Got started on a large cherry bowl that had bee drying in the air kiln- Had to make a run for some supplies today. Mimi said she was going to vacuum the pool. This is what I found when I got home- They stayed most of the afternoon! Safe turning and stay well
  4. I got my chuck made today. Don't thinki could have picked a hotter day. 93 feels like 100.
  5. I have never posted into this Wood Turners area, so I guess this is a first. A friend asked me to cut him a 16" Longworth chuck so today I tested my drawing that I did in Fusion 360 by cutting a 12" chuck. Looks like it came out just fine so I thought I would offer them in our Etsy shop. You can click on the link in my signature and see the offering but I didn't want to post a link like I was pushing it, just thought you lathe guys might want to see this - I used to turn a fair amount and still have my Oliver 8' bed lathe but it's not being used 'cause it's 3 phase and I don't have time to do any turning anyway. So if y'all see something in the Etsy listing that doesn't look right or that I have worded incorrectly I would appreciate a heads up. Thanks! David
