Veterans Day for Americans, and Remembrance Day for our Canadian and Commonwealth friends. In both of our countries they are recognized on the same day, and both days are just as important to each others nations. The Patriot Woodworker's would like to wish our Canadian and Commonwealth friends a memorable and thoughtful Remembrance Day this Friday, November 11th. To our own veterans here in the U.S. The Patriot Woodworker's want to thank you for your service and sacrifices, many of you have returned home from conflict whole, and many of you have returned home wounded. And many of you served during peace time. We can never repay our veterans for their service to our nation and our people, we stand on the shoulders of our veterans and active duty as we go about our daily lives living free and taking for granted the security and protections our veterans and active duty have afforded us. Without our military, we would be a nation under attack constantly, it is because of our service members we sleep soundly at night, knowing that the life we went to bed with, will be the same life we awake with. That same certainty cannot be guaranteed to our active duty and veterans alike. The lives of our active duty change daily, and the lives of our veterans contain memories and nightmares of their service and constant reminders of their own sacrifices in the form of physical scars and PTSD. Please know you are not forgotten! Thank you Veterans! To our Patriot Woodworker's here today, many of you are veterans as well. Thank you for your service, in honor of your service to our nation and for our veterans as well from Canada, we ask that you reply to this topic by answering the following. Well good morning Patriot Woodworkers! And a glorious morning it is! Let's start off with the big question of the new week, what's on your agenda for the week ahead and what did you get done over the weekend? For myself, and probably for many of you the weekend was dominated by the big event of the year, Christmas. I was able to sneak into my shop on Christmas Eve and get a little shaker stool assembled and glued up that I was working on. The next step will be weaving the seat in. The image at left and at this topic shows the stool in the dry fit stage, pre-glue up. When I assembled the stool posts and rungs, I was surprised actually at what a little challenge it can be to get everything lined up and squared. But after I got it all together and joints glued up, and a few clamps thrown in some strategical locations, it squared itself up and it all come together nicely. Our Adopt-a-Family Project As you know our Adopt-a-Family project was a huge success. And a few of the raffle winners here are waiting or your tools to arrive in the mail as I type. Don't fret, they will arrive, Woodcraft, and Laguna Tools have been notified, and things will start shipping. With the Christmas excitement at those locations things get pretty hectic. We raised together $1,159.00 for the Akin Family. A week before Christmas a check in the amount of $700.00 was mailed to the family to spend as they see fit for their holidays, and we purchased toys and clothing worth $300.00 for the kids Christmas list that was provided to us by the family. The remainder of the funds will also be sent to the family for their New Year fun. As stated we will provide a documented break down of how the funds were used, and we'll provide some documentation for the legitimacy of this campaign so you all can feel comfortable knowing the proceeds were used for their intended cause. We will do this after the last check is processed and sent to the family. Newsletter For those of you who may not know, we did send out a newsletter a few days ago, you can see it here at Merry Christmas Newsletter. I have a request to make regarding our newsletters. When we send them out, you have the option of not receiving them in the future by clicking on the bottom link to "Unsubscribe". If you wish to unsubscribe, please do not mark the reason "Spam". This kills our reputation for future emailing's. When an email is marked spam, the sender ends up on a naughty list in a world wide data base, and then future emails are flagged for content, and our reputation is soiled. We do not send out spam. We send out newsletters very infrequently, and when we do send them out they are informational, we are not trying to send out ads that encourage you to purchase anything, no tricks to get you to click on a link that takes you to Timbucktoo, and we don't flood your inbox with worthless garbage. So please, if you wish to unsubscribe, just mark the option "Not interested anymore". That would help us out a whole bunch. They include Mr. Akin our wounded warrior, Mrs. Akin, his spouse, and Xavier, their 5 year old son, Alexander, their younger 2 year old son, and little Amelia, their new 2 month old baby girl. The Akin Family Below History Mr. Akin was deployed to Afghanistan in 2012, he was riding in the gunner seat of a JERRV (Joint Engineering Rapid Response Vehicle) in a convoy, and the vehicle was hit by an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) almost directly under where he was sitting. His team leader was wounded in his head resulting in a Terminal Brain Injury, but Mr. Akin sustained the brunt of the explosion force and shrapnel. Joint Engineering Rapid Response Vehicle Mr. Akin spent his time recovering at a hospital in Fort Lewis, Washington, from a broken left femur, resulting in rod and screws being placed down his entire femur. His right foot and ankle were shattered, followed by a year and a half that included 5 surgeries, plates and screws, then eventually resulting in a below the knee amputation. He also fractured his tail bone, and received a head wound resulting an a Terminal Brain Injury. In Closing Ok Patriot Woodworker's, it's time to muster and it's time to show everyone what we are all about! The purpose our woodworking community was created is for this reason, to help those who have served us, and paid the price. Short and sweet here guys, got one leg under the keyboard and 1 foot out the door to work! So sorry, I had to wake up early and fry up some Empanadas for the boys at work, we take turns bringing in food the last two weeks up to Christmas. Got up around 3am and been frying since, and I'm running late! So, what did you all get done over the weekend, and what have you planned for the week ahead? Good morning folks! I swear I just sat down a day ago and typed up our Monday morning greeting, I think I am in a time machine! So for the big question of the day, what did you get done over the weekend, what have you planned for the week ahead! Please tell us, and please if you can post images so we can see what you're working on, or where you went. Like all artists, we are a visual group of folks and love sight stories, good photos, good content, and we are in heaven. Weather Who here lives in snow country, I have been seeing on the news some incredible snow happening with some unbelievable sights. Cars sliding for an entire city block, airports snowed in and flights canceled. Wow! Here in Southern California we have a weather alert when it drops below 36 degrees with a slight chance of rain. Please see these AAA tips for driving in the snow, and if you have any comments or additional tips, please input them in this topic. And be safe! Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Applying the gas slowly to accelerate is the best method for regaining traction and avoiding skids. Don’t try to get moving in a hurry. And take time to slow down for a stoplight. Remember: It takes longer to slow down on icy roads. Drive slowly. Everything takes longer on snow-covered roads. Accelerating, stopping, turning – nothing happens as quickly as on dry pavement. Give yourself time to maneuver by driving slowly. The normal dry pavement following distance of three to four seconds should be increased to eight to ten seconds. This increased margin of safety will provide the longer distance needed if you have to stop. Know your brakes. If you have anti-lock brakes (ABS) and need to slow down quickly, press hard on the pedal-it’s normal for the pedal to vibrate a bit when the ABS is activated. Don’t stop if you can avoid it. There’s a big difference in the amount of inertia it takes to start moving from a full stop versus how much it takes to get moving while still rolling. If you can slow down enough to keep rolling until a traffic light changes, do it. What did I get done this weekend? Personally I did not get much done in the shop this weekend, we did however head out to find a Christmas tree, we typically come home with a Douglas, they are inexpensive, but this year we came home with a Noble, the price was right, and it's a great tree, I had to hose it down because it had so much dust on it, but after a good hosing, the green came through nicely. If you do have a tree in your home during the Holidays, what type do you typically have in your home? Good morning folks! I can't believe we are heading into Christmas already, I still feel like we just got out of summer, Halloween was just a week ago, Thanksgiving was a few days ago, time is going by way to fast. In my own personal life time does fly though, with a full time day job, I'm up at 4am and don't get home from work till 6pm, shop time after hours to help pay for college tuition, and our three wonderful kids who all have after school projects and events going on near daily, me and the Misses typically get to sit down around 9pm after all the smoke has settled, we can finally look at each other, hug, and we convince ourselves, "that wasn't so bad now was it?" One day at a time, life is good, fun, and most definitely busy! And that is why the time just flies for us, it can be crazy! It seems like one day floats into the next. There are millions of Americans with busy schedules like ours, personally, I wouldn't have it any other way, now talk to me in another ten years near retirement, I'll have a different opinion about it I am sure! But in the middle of all that craziness and hectic lifestyle we get to enjoy the moments that seem very special, as they are far and few in between, the quiet happens rarely in our home. So when I do get out in the shop, it's a very special time for me to be able to redirect my senses elsewhere. Like the simply wonderful project in the Friday topic I showed you all a steam box I am working on, actually it's done. Below are some final images of the steam box, I'll get a few more images up later today of the build process. But it was super fun, it did not require an abundance of skill, it was one of those projects where you can just relax, and screw some boards together and have fun. I like these projects. What's on your woodworking or life agenda for the week? As always for our Monday topic, we want to know what is on your woodworking and or life agenda for the upcoming week! My steam box for bending wood The box is solid pine, the dimensions are 6" x 6" by 4' long. I performed a shake down cruise on the box and that sucker heated up fast, and it was hot!!!!!!! There is an area I need to address though, some of the knots are leaking steam, not much though, so I'll need to fill those tiny cracks in with some strong heat resistant epoxy. Woops, forgot to put the thermometer in, here you go. So with that folks, we hope you all are doing great, I personally wish you all a wonderful day, a wonderful week, and stay safe, and as our buddy Ralph Jones always says, never put your hands closer than 6" to any saw blade, I think he says that right! Welcome to Friday and another wonderful weekend. I love this time of year but I am waiting on the utility department to get my gas line moved so I can get heat back in my shop. So far it hasn't been a problem, but we are expecting a cold front this weekend and temps down around freezing. That's going to hurt since it was 81 yesterday and set a new record high. Oh well it is what it is. This week I made a couple of Cedar Crates out of cut off pieces from Egg Tables. I got these put together and made them stackable. I posted these on Facebook and they sold already which it what I like. I also picked up a load of Ash lumber this week from my Sawyer. I got the Maple and Red Elm stickered and stacked this week so now I have got to go to the barn and make room for this. Yesterday I got a batch of Pizza peels glued and ready to start to cut down and finish. So that is my weekend, what is on your Patriot Woodworker agenda? The United States Marine Corps traces its institutional roots to the Continental Marines of the American Revolutionary War, formed by Captain Samuel Nicholas by a resolution of the Second Continental Congress on 10 November 1775, to raise two battalions of Marines. That date is regarded and celebrated as the date of the Marine Corps' birthday. At the end of the American Revolution, both the Continental Navy and Continental Marines were disbanded in April 1783. The institution itself would not be resurrected until 11 July 1798. At that time, in preparation for the Quasi-War with France, Congress created the United States Marine Corps. Marines had been enlisted by the War Department as early as August 1797 for service in the new-build frigates authorized by the Congressional "Act to provide a Naval Armament" of 18 March 1794, which specified the numbers of Marines to be recruited for each frigate. Civic Duty Yep, it's that time of year again, and it's a duty we take seriously in our nation. Your vote counts, so head to the polls and make your voice be heard! My philosophy has always been, if you don't vote, you can't complain! Dale Felice's carving brings in funds for a young man Patriot Woodworker and Veteran Dale Felice is a carver, on a big scale. He uses his chainsaw to carve logs, and what comes out of those logs are some fantastic art pieces. One of his art pieces went up for auction to benefit Brady who was diagnosed with Sarcoma. We are so proud of Dale, our community was founded on the principles that Dale exhibits with his work and his "Give Back" attitude to causes that are near and dear to his heart. He frequently carves for benefits and auctions for law enforcement and veterans events. Thank you Dale for your service to our nation, and your continued service in the civilian world! Good Morning all! Here we go again, these weeks are just ticking off like crazy now, it seems just a few days ago we were celebrating the 4th of July, and here we are into Fall and heading to the Holidays! My goodness. What have yall been up too over the weekend? What did you create, what did you destroy! Did you get productive or were there just too many games on the tube to watch? How about them Cubs and Indians, whether you are a fan or not, I love the history behind these clubs and I am glad to see these guys hit the big time. This will be a fun series to watch. Wounded warrior adopt a family project This year like last, we are embarking on a project to adopt our Wounded Warrior Family for Christmas. An organization we proudly support sponsors the Adopt a Family for Christmas project, and they reach out to us to provide a family of a Wounded Warrior the funds they need to have a Christmas. These families are in difficult times, and they need our help. We will fire this project up officially this week. There will be a raffle of some wonderful tools provided by our sponsors, and everyone is invited to participate, 100% of the proceeds will be sent to our adopted family. Good Monday Morning Patriot Woodworker's! It's great to be alive, woke up this morn and found the same beautiful lady that's been next to me over the last 25 years, I still know what day it is, I counted the fingers on my hands, and I wiggled my toes, check, check and check, all is well! Time to get to work! So, what are you all up to this grand day? What have you done in your shops over the weekend? What did you do in life over the weekend? What are going to do during this coming week! We love to know, we love to keep tabs, and we also really love to see any images you may have produced over the weekend or anytime for that matter. Projects, honey-do's, heck, the ball game you went to! We'd love to see it all. So step up and show us what you have been doing. I was able to get in the shop for a spell and make some progress on a Claro Walnut Rocker, and I made pretty good progress. There is a topic for the rocker going on right now. And I spent much of the weekend getting my Professional Land Surveyors application started and on its way for me to sit for the exam in April 2017. TPW News We've been busy on our end making improvements in your community and just having fun with all the wonderful topics being submitted by all of us. In the back room we have cooked up something for our community, it has been in the works for awhile now since it was suggested by @steamshovel and we are very happy with the results. We have a new Links Directory where you can submit your favorite woodworking links, and based on the original suggestion, we can also share links that may benefit our veterans. See this tutorial on how you can submit your links to our directory. Our Gallery Lately we have had some beautiful work submitted by you. I thought we'd share some of those albums. Steven Krumanaker's bowls are beautiful - Gerald submitted some awesome work as well at Bowls and Platters - Steven Newman's Walnut Night Stand - Dale Felice's Chainsaw Carvings - These are just a few examples of your projects being submitted to our gallery. The spikes on this item are around 5" in length. There are two mounting holes on the frame, and the part holding the spikes can freely rotate on the threaded shaft. Turning the handle raises and lowers the spikes, which can all pivot outwards.

Good Monday Morning Patriot Woodworker's! What did you do over the weekend, and what projects do you have lined up for the week ahead? Well here we are, embarking on yet another grand week of life as we head into one of my favorite times of the year, Fall! I know some of our woodworkers in the Mid-West and East-Coast may be starting to prepare for Fall and Winter. Since I live in Southern CA, there really isn't anything we do on a traditional basis to prepare for the Winter months, most of us West Coast folks rejoice at the chance of rain! So, we have just fired up our brand new Home Improvement along with the Patio and Outdoors forums for our members to show off their home improvement and outdoors projects, feel free to drop in and show us what your up to, we know many of you must be doing something to get prepped for the cold season ahead. Here are some ideas that you could discuss at the Home Improvement forums, since Fall is ready to fall upon us. Weatherizing your windows for the cold and wet season ahead, what did you use? Installing leaf guards on your gutters, which system works? Repairing your roof or simply sliding that one shingle back in place, what did you use for the adhesive? Installing the bottom seal of your exterior entrance door, how'd ya do it? Splitting logs for the long winter ahead, what kind of splitter do you own and would you recommend it to others? There are many small items we do on a yearly basis that we take for granted, that would actually make a great Home Improvement topic. This is your official Monday wake up call and all around nosy inquiry regarding your activities over the weekend and what you may have planned for the week ahead. We like to see what you have built, working on, or are ready to launch into. So go ahead and show us your work, and tell us what's in the oven. Even if your shop was or is dead for the time being, we'd also like to know just overall how the heck are ya. How's life, how's family, how are you? Updates on current happenings As many of you know our winners have been chosen for the Homes for Our Troops raffle fundraiser and the prizes have already shipped, and our lucky recipients have already reported receiving them. I'd like to thank all the participants who donated to Homes for Our Troops in exchange for raffle entries, we raised over $1100.00 with more than 550 ticket purchases. These funds were donated directly to Homes for Our Troops, as usual with these fund raisers, we do not handle any of the transactions, nor the funds, all donations are entered directly to Homes for Our Troops. We only provide the excitement! Wiki progress Also, our Patriot Woodwiki is coming to be a reality soon. I have been working feverishly on article creation templates for our editors and collaborators (you) to make it easy to populate a blank page, with pre-made templates of information. All you need to do is provide the content! If you'd like to see our wiki in progress, please click on the navigation tab above titled "Wiki". There are some research projects I started already to spur activity when we do open our wiki.
