Another day and no storms until this evening... or so they say. My goal for the day was to get all six posts finished. We left off with the mortising yesterday.
Almost finished here. The Douglas Fir is easy on my planes and auger bits but has been murder on my chisels. I brought my sharpening kit with me today and have been touching up my chisels after each post is done. I squared the sides with a framing chisel and the ends with a 1/2" mortise chisel.
Here is the detail I carved on the ends of the chamfers. Not quite a lamb's tongue but I like it and so does the home owner. After doing all four side in this manner the post is finished and ready for either planning or sanding. I am undecided on which. I think breaking out the belt sander from its dusty, lonely corner in my shop will be more efficient for this project as opposed to a smoothing plane. Maybe a bit of both? We'll see when the time comes.
