I need Mitre Saw help.

John Moody's Miter Saw thread, and my reply got me wondering.  I only use my miter saw for rough cutting for length.  I never pull a piece off it and expect it to meet at the angle I want it to be. I…Continue

I finally finished my 10!  My hat is off to you turners that do many many more than I did.  Between work and other activities I had to turn in spurts.  I am home until the the new year now so I made…Continue

A friend of mine bought a planer 4 or 5 years ago when he thought he was going to remodel his house.  He did fix up a basement room but never got around to the rest of the house.  I asked him then if…Continue

I am not much of a duck hunter.  However, many of my friends are.  Occasionally they will ask for a hand turned call.  Here are some of my recent efforts.  From left to right.  Maple Burl with copper…Continue

"This seems a bit dated.  http://www.freedompens.org/ Like John said local groups still donate to the pens for troops program."

Playing with food color

My daughter's favorite color is green.  I have plenty of acrylic in shades of green but she wanted a wooden pen.  This is a piece of figured maple I got from Bob Kloes.  I turned it to size and colored it with green food color mixed with white vinegar.  The color is very vivid now.  Time will tell if it resists fading.  I am pretty sure she will lose it before I get to check though.  It is on a Titanium gold fancy slim with a turned center band.…See More

My PITH pen

On another forum I participate in there is a activity called Pen In The Hat (PITH).  Basically it's a pen swap.  I make a pen and send it to a member.  Another member makes a pen and sends it to me.  This spring's theme was construction lumber.  Pine to be exact.  My pen is made from base board removed from my grandparents house during a 2009 remodel by my niece.  She is a great granddaughter.  The house was built in the 20s using locally harvested timber.  My grandparents, my parents, my…See More

3 phase dust collector on single phase power.

Awhile back I bought a 3 HP 3 Phase 220 VAC dust collector at the Delta recondition warehouse.  I didn’t know it was 3 phase when I bought it.  I would like to set it up in my shop, but only have 220 VAC single phase power.  My question to the forum is: Can this thin run using a VFD?  Of course I don’t need variable speed but VFDs are inexpensive. Would a static phase converter be a better option than a VFD? Would a rotary phase converter be better that the VFD or static converter?  I don’t…See More

Profile Information

Please tell us about yourself.
I am a hobby wood worker. Self taught by a poor teacher. I build mostly for myself but am asked frequently to build for others. I have recently begun turning. The table saw is lonely.

I spent most of my adult life serving in the U.S. Navy. I enlisted for a job, and stayed because of the adventure. I retired in 2000. I miss it every day.
Please describe your main woodworking interests.
I just love the smell of sawdust in the mornings.

Greg, thank you for the welcome aboard.  I will be moving to the Mt. Juliet/Lebanon, TN area.  My folks live in Lebanon now so I plan on taking care of them for as long as I can.  Glad to see a fellow VOLS fan on here.  I can't wait to get back into VOLS country.  Nice to meet you and look forward to talking to y'all soon.

Hello Greg,
Mr Jones is dead and I am only Ralph as I like to keep things informal. However when a youngster calls me by Mr. Jones I consider it a respectful way of starting a conversation.

Respectfully,

Ralph
