  1. For @Larry Buskirk - consider a rented mule like a rented car and what some of those go through. @Gunny could probably add something here as I understand he pumps a lot of diesel and E85 out of rental cars that are neither diesels nor set up for corn An interesting observation for me years ago was that most deep south farms before tractors became prevalent used mules. Growing up in NY the closest I came to mules was washing with Borax soap! Work horses were the common beast of burden in the north until tractors took over. I've asked several people over the years why mules were the choice but can't say I've ever gotten a definitive (for me) answer. Some answers I've gotten were that mules were (are) better adapted for the heat (maybe), mules were cheaper (don't know why they would have been, you have to buy each replacement as they are sterile - or keep two other animals solely for breeding), hybrid vigor with the cross breeding (but if this were so mules would have been used up north too). But anyhow, being worked like a rented mule is no fun... And speaking of mules (sort of), one of my favorite expressions by a former president - LBJ... "sometimes you just have to hunker down and take it like a jackass in a hailstorm". That pretty much sums it up for me right there!!! Thanks for dredging up some pleasant memories for me @User74, I appreciate it
  2. Yesterday's overcast was high thin clouds so lots of sun and mid 80's. Forecast is the same for today. We should be in for a great peach crop this year, our peach growers can use it Same goes for pecans. I ought to fertilize my blueberries but if I do we may not get any rain until June!
  3. An absolutely beautiful day here in middle Georgia yesterday. Mid 80's, light warm breeze, good air quality, full sun, sweetness in the air Today is forecast for overcast, but all else equal or better. Sun is coming out so that overcast may be thin high clouds. In any event, another great day to be outside doing anything.
  4. No doubt that being in south Georgia you are familiar with the expression... being worked like a rented mule...
  5. Weekend was busy with most of Saturday taken up with yard work. Spent a lot more time than expected cutting some quarter round trim for daughter's pantry. One day I just drew a blank on how to angle the miter saw for those cuts and walked away from it. The next day it all clicked and I got a bunch of small pieces and parts cut out. Began applying finish to them yesterday and should complete this today. Not sure when we will trek back to the city to install. Balance of the week, I have a wind chime to finish and a couple to clean up and hang. And then plans, make some plans. I want to build a small side board for a spot in the kitchen that seems to be a junk magnet plans are needed. We are putting plans together for a train trip to the west coast. I believe we have the route plotted out, now it's putting the dates together, seeing if any of the young one's want to meet up with us along the way, seeing what's available at a reasonable cost at the various stops we will make and so forth. But getting the route drawn out was a huge first step for us.
  6. I don't think it can get much better than yesterday's sunny, low 80's and warm breezes - but we are going to try with a repeat of it today As icing on the cake, the pittosporum is in full bloom and has the whole yard enveloped in a wonderful perfume of sweetness. If you are looking for me, I'll be outside. May not be doing much of anything, but I'll be doing it outside!
  7. Full sun today with low 80's predicted. The next 10 days show varying amounts of sun with low temps being upper 50's & low 60's to a mid 80's each day until next weekend when it cools down again. Rain maybe Monday week, we'll be needing it again by then. Our air quality is generally improving as we move into late spring. Most of the trees have finished flowering and swapped over to growing leaves. I've still a lot of shrubs in full flower and some yet to flower.
  8. Great score Fred! Getting some payback for your having paid it forward a year or so ago Looking forward to your test & review of them...

    Ramp

I've done a couple ramps also and used a variation of the cut and test method. After getting the ramp stringers in place, set the bottom or top piece in place. Using a level, square, 2x4 or anything straight - lay that on the ground against that piece needing the cut and mark the edge. In a perfect world the top and bottom pieces will have the same cut - as Fred's calculator has shown. And welcome aboard Patpurple, glad to have you here. Please post up some progress pics...
  10. A cold 48* this morning. We did get in the low 70's yesterday with winds gusting to about 35 mph. Today is supposed to be more full sun, upper 70's and a bit less windy than yesterday. Beautiful late spring day here in middle GA.
