I have spent time on Paul's site and blog and can say that he does a fantastic job of explaining and demonstrating the techniques he is teaching. The basics are needed to fully understand what and why you are doing the steps to any project. Simple concepts like wood expansion and contraction, why joints fail and so on are basic but if you don't know these things some of your projects will fail and you'll never know why. Even a seasoned woodworker would gain something I think, maybe something forgotten or some new concept never learned. A review is always helpful. And Paul usually backs these concepts with simple but useful projects. Take a look for yourself, I promise it won't hurt. He will throw in some of his outlooks on life as a bonus......3 points -

HAHA,...yep,....most all of the big names are in that guild. There is for sure a buncha talent there. My buddy Bill has been in it for years,...I think I was a member for a year when I first got introduced to all this but let my membership slide. Most all of their meetings etc,.. are up in Pennsylvania, there really wasn't much I could do with it besides send them $$.2 points

This is reasonably close to me, though I used to live a lot closer. One of the principals in the restoration was a former neighbor of mine and his daughter baby-sat for us. I visited there a long time ago, but it had quite a ways to go. There was also another Shaker community now closer to me (Lebanon, OH)1 point

@aaronc, thanks for your view and wether you meant it or not, encouragement for me to delve into this full steam. You know what I love about all of it? It's AMERICAN! From the melting pot of makers that came from other countries to the native born, to our contemporary makers of today, like yourself, and all the history in between. Thanks for being here man.1 point -
Yes,..addictive,..and Deeeeep. The history on this stuff is simply a mess. From all the different "schools" of the long rifle to the evolution of all the artwork on both them and the horns. To be a really small niche in history chronologically,...this subject matter is JAM PACKED. Guys dissect this stuff 9 ways from Sunday. Stock shapes,..carving,..trigger styles,..lock styles,..regional tendencies,..man it goes on forever. I'm not saying any of this to discourage,..but only putting out there that there are guys that devote their lives literally to the study of it...at least their part of it whatever that may be. For me it is encouraging,..for it is a rabbit hole that you will never find the end of, a total journey. It is the small niche of horn making,..but even more specifically scrimshaw that has settled in to be my passion. The political and religious connotations of the time that were scratched on some of these horns were SIGNIFICANT. You could have been hanged for the symbolism of it. I've accumulated almost all of the powder horn books that I can find which exist, only a couple or so left I think. That being said I have a pile of the rifle books as well,....can't go wrong with it1 point

Paralyzed Veterans of America

I give to that organization each month. I was the facilitator for a Multiple Sclerosis support group here in town for 11 years. I had a representative come one weekend to speak to our group. We had several veterans in our group and the representative was very helpful to help them fill out paperwork, gave his phone number and email so folks could contact him. He drove down from Montgomery, AL to talk to our group and drove back without taking anything. I couldn't even buy him lunch. Great group of people. Like every other organization, they change out people and some of them are better than others.1 point -
