I've still got several of the natural edge walnut bowls to finish. Took this one in the house today. It's about 12" diameter and 6" deep. I burned one of my favorite zentangle patterns on the bottom, "phicops in a circle". Steve Steve

which isn't really all that common around here. The NWS says we only have a 25% chance of a white Christmas on average, but this is one of those years...depending on who you listen too we will get 1-4" today. there was a time I always wished for snow on Christmas, but no more....I'm OK with just cold. Regardless, one more chance to wish everyone here:

    I got DISCOVERED!

A long-time friend (50+ years), now living on the Left Coast, rented a house here for two weeks for a Christmas family reunion. He couldn't get the keys until Friday, so he and his wife stayed with us for a few days. This is the first time he has been here long enough to see my shop, and he was amazed at all the tools. Apparently all HIS tools fit into a 14" x 8" x 3" high Rubbermaid box! Anyway, they left Friday, and she discovered that she had left a couple of things behind, so they dropped by last night to pick them up. Imagine my surprise when SIX people showed up at the door, and my friend told me I just HAD to show them my shop! His brother-in-law, who lives in Washington state, is an avid DIY"er, and was particularly impressed with my storage system for small parts and odds'n ends. Said he got a lot of ideas that he planned to incorporate in his own garage shop. It always gives me a good feeling to help someone else out. And nobody even MENTIONED the messy condition of the shop! John

    a little bed rest.

Went to the emergency room a couple days ago and was admitted to the hospital. They say I suffered a mild stroke, but I'm home now and plan to enjoy Christmas with the family at my daughter- in-laws home with the great grand children and grand children. Merry Christmas to everyone here.

    Christmas in Nashville, TN

In June my wife Tami and I found out that Tami's Mom had terminal pancreatic cancer. So we brought her to our home in Corona, CA to do hospice care as Tami's brother and his family live a few minutes away. Her Mom passed on July 27th and we finally got the entire estate closed out and all the funds to the family have been delivered. So Tami and I are pooped out so we decided to basically "Cancel Christmas" this year as we have been burning the candle at both ends for the past 6 months non-stop and we are in some desperate need of "R&R". So tomorrow morning we will be flying out to Nashville TN to spend 2 weeks exploring future retirement locations for us. Tami will most likely take a medical retirement in 2018 as she was born with cerebral palsy and she had her right hip replaced in 2016 and in 2018 will have to have her left knee replaced. So after talking with our money guy and looking at all the options, we are looking to get out of California and move the midwest. We will be bouncing around south of Nashville looking into Smyrna, Murfreesboro and Franklin TN as they have some good school districts in that area. Tami has been a "Special Educator" for over 30 years working primarily with children with autism so she wants to become a part time "Substitute Teacher" for Children with Special Needs". We will also be looking around north west of Nashville in the Clarksville area. We will then head into Kentucky and spend some time in Bowling Green and Elizabethtown. So hopefully we will have no issues on our trip. Us "California Kids" will have to get used to some colder weather as we travel. :-)

    How to Start a Fight

This is a conversation between a husband and his wife. Please note that she asks five or six questions which he answered quite simply; but, then she is speechless after answering only one question. l bet this happens more often than not to most husbands out there. Woman: Do you drink beer? Man: Yes. Woman: How many beers a day? Man: Usually about three. Woman: How much do you pay per beer? Man: $5..00 which includes a tip (this is where it gets scary!). Woman: And how long have you been drinking? Man: About 20 years, I suppose. Woman: So a beer costs $5 and you have three beers a day which puts your spending each month at $450. In one year, it would be approximately $5400 correct? Man: Correct. Woman: If in 1 year you spend $5400, not accounting for inflation, the past 20 years puts your spending at $108,000 correct? Man: Correct. Woman: Do you know that if you didn’t drink so much beer, that money could have been put in a step-up interest savings account and after accounting for compound interest for the past 20 years, you could have now bought an airplane? Man: Do you drink beer? Woman: No. Man: Where is your airplane?

Interesting to see that instruction sheet is old enough it only has the postal zone and not a zip code yet... don't think i'd ever be interested in one of those "tools"

We have about 5 inches of freshly crystallized dihydrogen oxide. At a nippy 6 degrees (edit1: now 4 degrees, edit2: now 3 degrees!), its likely to stay for a while.

Santa is moving to the South Pole What? Thanks to rising global temperatures, rapidly melting Arctic ice and growing human operations in the North, Santa Claus has signed an agreement with the International community to relocate his village next year to operate in an exclusive zone in the South Pole. So What? Santa’s relocation agreement marks the first time that the international community agrees on a common legal definition of climate change that includes refugees as corporations, as well as individuals. This deal is expected to lead to the deployment of a global climate change refugee visa system that in the near future could help to more easily relocate individuals and corporations facing the impacts of climate change.

looks like this is the Christmas greetings thread. I likely won't be posting or reading much come Christmas day. so I'll say Merry Christmas to all now. The Christmas Story from Luke: Luke 2:1-14 - 1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cæsar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. 2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) 3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judæa, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. 6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. John 3:16 - 16 ¶ For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

I would have never guessed it was a nose hair trimmer even though it looked like one. Looking at the machining marks it is no wonder it doesn't work well. Looks crude to me and can easily see it as a nose hair puller. Maybe it is Harbor Freight brand. Here is one with better machining.
